Description
Homer’s Iliad is the enduring story of Achilles and his wrath during the final year of the Trojan War, a monumental poem of honor, vengeance, courage, divine intervention, and the terrible human cost of glory.
This edition presents Alexander Pope’s celebrated eighteenth-century English verse translation. Written in heroic couplets and shaped by the characteristic music, grandeur, and formal elegance of English Neoclassical poetry, Pope’s Iliad became a landmark in the history of Homer’s reception in English.
Samuel Johnson famously wrote of Pope’s Homer that “his version may be said to have tuned the English tongue.”
Presented in an elegant 6 × 9 inch edition, this volume pairs Pope’s distinctive poetic rendering with a restrained, classically inspired design, making it suitable both for reading and for the bookshelf.
